Holiday Sales Strong for Independent Master Woodworkers

Morris Plains, NJ (PRWEB) December 28, 2009 -- Craftspeople at the top of their art working with non-traditional materials are benefiting from this market upturn.

Early holiday indicators are pointing towards higher than expected sales for some of the world's finest artisans of small handheld works of art like custom writing instruments, wine stoppers, jewelry and sculpture.

M3 Composite Industries(www.M3ci.com), a manufacturer of a space age metal composite called M3 (M3 works with wood tools but finishes like metal) reports that December sales of blanks to the woodturning trade has been higher than expected. "What we are hearing is that our customers have sold out of the pieces that they produced for the holiday season and are re-ordering early to fill custom orders and restock. Something that usually occurs in January and February" says a company spokesperson.

Jim Johnson, Michael Gaule (WWW.CELTICWOODSHOP.COM), David Collins (www.CollinsWoodCrafting.com) and Roy Robaldo (www.bella-penna.com) are just a few top craftsmen to benefit from this market upturn. By matching high end materials such as M3 Mokume Gane with exquisite precious metal pen parts and adding their own special craftsmanship they are creating true handheld works of art.

"I have been working with wood for 35 years and can't believe that today my finest pieces are no longer crafted from wood. I think that my customers are attracted to M3 Mokume Gane because it is a combination of contrasting metals with a wood grain pattern. The fact that I can work this new material with my existing woodworking tools and skills has opened up a whole new world of opportunity for me" says Jim Johnson a professional wood turner from Easton, PA.

Exotic new age materials expertly paired with the age old elegance of rhodium, platinum, silver and gold make a rich pallet for today's master craftspeople. I believe that the addition of materials like M3 Mokume Gane to this pallet has helped to focus a light on these talented people and their magnificent creations.

Fine writing instruments, mostly fountain pens and rollerballs priced anywhere from $250 to $1,000 appear to be driving this market. These small but exquisite pieces fully represent the skills of the craftsperson and the magnificence of the materials at a reasonable price. I think that we will find that market share is shifting from the big name pen makers who offer high priced mass-produced plastic to these masterpieces that are individually crafted by hand by skilled craftspeople and made from a solid blank or billet. Add to that the current trend to purchase from local artisans and vendors and the increase in this market becomes easy to understand.
